Let’s face it, social media can be A LOT. In the past 5-7 years it’s gone from being a fun diversion to something we’re told can make or break businesses. And sure, those snazzy short-form videos and photogenic pics can help build a brand. But as a business owner, you’ve got plenty on your plate other than trying to post ten times a day (hopefully.)
Still, the FOMO is real. It’s easy to worry you’re not doing all the things, especially when your feed is filled with pro-level vids of dancers, chefs, and “entrepreneurs” who manage an endless stream of content.
But here’s the thing. Those people are literally content creators. That means that THEIR JOB is dancing on TikTok or baking cakes on Instagram or pouting by a 5-star hotel pool. Their whole thing is creating content. They’re 100% their brand, and their brand is 100% them. Some of them are making their living that way – through ads, partnerships, and so on – while others are hobbyists doing it for the likes. They need to understand the ins and outs of social media to a super-deep degree, because every algorithm tweak, trend, or new influencer can reshape their day.
Contrast that with a business owner. Hi, that’s you! Your job is to live your purpose, serve your clients well, and get paid what you’re worth. Yep, marketing is part of building a great business, and some of your marketing efforts are going to involve social media. You might be out there posting content with the best of them, but it shouldn’t be your whole raison d’être. You’re not making your money through social – you’re making it through delivering specialized goods or services. (And you’re totally using newsletters and leadgen pages to help achieve this, aren’t you?)
Far too often we see business owners taking tips, tricks, and advice from business gurus who are way comfier in a creator hat than a business owner one. These gurus tell people to post every day, create absolutely wild amounts of content, and run around doing all sorts of stuff more likely to lead to burnout and resentment than it is viral content. Especially when you’re made to believe that these smiley content creators are carving out their social niches all on their lonesome. Trust me, friends – every single one of those creators guised as business owners (think: Gary Vee, Marie Forleo, Amy Porterfield types) have a WHOLE TEAM helping them create the illusion of ease and simplicity. (Btw, here’s how to do it on a budget.)
